Hello everyone,

Welcome to the 217th edition of The Pattern, a weekly newsletter on the latest in finance, technology, and the economy.

If you've seen *The Odyssey*, you know it's a story about a long journey home, with very different worlds colliding along the way. India's credit market has a similar contrast playing out right now.

One borrower opens an app, consents to sharing their financial data, and lets a lender look at their financial history before deciding what to lend. Another walks into a branch with a gold chain wrapped in a cloth pouch and borrows against whatever it's worth that day.

They look like completely different credit journeys. But both made news this week. And putting them next to each other got me wondering: are these two sides of Indian lending really as far apart as they look?

**Banks are taking AA into mortgages**
Sahamati, the self-regulatory body for India's Account Aggregator network, released its FY26 numbers this week, and the scale is no longer a rounding error.

- Rs [3.82 ](https://ianslive.in/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-382-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26--20260827133606?ref=research.finbox.in)lakh crore in loan disbursals facilitated through the AA framework in FY26, across 3.68 crore loans
- That's now [8.4%](https://ianslive.in/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-382-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26--20260827133606?ref=research.finbox.in) of all retail and MSME lending in the country by value, and a striking [11.8%](https://ianslive.in/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-382-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26--20260827133606?ref=research.finbox.in) by volume, meaning AA-enabled loans skew smaller and more numerous than the market average
- Home loans and loans against property routed through AA grew [624%](https://bfsi.economictimes.indiatimes.com/articles/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-3-82-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26/133562445?ref=research.finbox.in) year on year, reaching [1.09](https://bfsi.economictimes.indiatimes.com/articles/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-3-82-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26/133562445?ref=research.finbox.in) lakh loans worth Rs [20,777](https://encoded-592c9deb-987b-4562-aa3c-9fa3d37d83e9.uri/https%3a%2f%2f20%2c777?ref=research.finbox.in) crore
- Banks now account for [47.3% ](https://ianslive.in/indias-account-aggregator-ecosystem-drives-rs-382-lakh-crore-loans-in-fy26--20260827133606?ref=research.finbox.in)of AA-enabled lending by value in the second half of FY26, nearly on par with the non-bank lenders who were early adopters.

The home loan number is the one I stopped on. Secured lending always seemed like the harder category for consent-based data sharing to crack. It's still a business built around relationships, paperwork and physical checks. In a home loan, someone still needs to verify the property before the lender signs off.

But that seems to be changing. Banks are now using AA almost as much as the fintechs and NBFCs that got there early. Digital lenders started using consented financial data to make personal loans faster. Now banks are using that same data for mortgages.

A part of lending that has traditionally depended on paperwork, relationships and physical verification is starting to rely on financial data too. And lenders wouldn't be making that shift if they weren't seeing a reason to.

If you want to see what actually happens to that data once a lender gets hold of it, [FinBox's comparison of Account Aggregator data analysis providers](https://research.finbox.in/blog/account-aggregator-data-analysis-for-lending-provider-comparison/) is worth a read, it's a map of where the parsing stops and the real underwriting decision begins.

**Gold is pulling its weight**
While banks were busy plugging into all that consented data, credit's oldest technology was having a moment of its own. Gold and silver [hit fresh highs](https://www.livemint.com/money/personal-finance/gold-silver-prices-today-28-august-check-retail-rates-of-24k-22k-gold-999-silver-in-delhi-mumbai-and-kolkata-11787885977535.html?ref=research.finbox.in) again today in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Blame it on three things building through August:

- A weaker dollar
- Softer US jobs and inflation numbers, which have markets leaning toward a September rate cut
- Central banks buying gold at a record clip, even while prices were sliding earlier this year

Most people will file that under festive-season jewellery shopping and move on. Lenders shouldn't. A gold loan is priced off whatever the metal is worth that day, so when the rate climbs, the same necklace or coin a borrower pledged last year can suddenly support a bigger loan. No new paperwork, no fresh consent, nothing. The collateral is simply worth more.

This is, if you think about it, almost the opposite of what we just saw with consented data. Loan against gold has become one of India's biggest secured credit categories precisely because it doesn't need most of that information. No bureau history, no bank statement, no digital footprint. A scale and a branch manager's judgment can do what a much more elaborate underwriting process does elsewhere. [Thin-file and new-to-credit underwriting](https://research.finbox.in/blog/best-credit-underwriting-software-nbfcs-india-compared/) exists because bureau-only lending can't see these borrowers. Gold, meanwhile, is already reaching many of the same people without any of that machinery. When gold prices rise, an underbanked household can suddenly borrow more against the gold it already has.

**The opportunity is in the overlap**
India's basically using two very different approaches to credit at the same time. One is built on consent and financial data, and it's moving fast enough that banks are now using it for mortgages too, something I called out early in [The Pattern #147: Not just loans, AA is set to improve almost all financial experiences](https://www.finbox.in/newsletter/thepattern/the-pattern-147-not-just-loans-aa-is-set-to-improve-almost-all-financial-experiences?ref=research.finbox.in). The other runs on collateral, trust and a weighing scale, and it's getting a boost right now from central banks buying gold around the world.

Neither is going to replace the other, I don't think. Someone with little or no credit history but a gold chain still has more options today than someone with neither. What I find more interesting is what happens if these two worlds eventually start coming together. If gold-loan data, pledge history and repayment records could sit alongside the financial data lenders already get through AA, a borrower who is difficult to assess today could become much easier to understand.

That could turn India's oldest form of collateral into a new source of credit data. Nobody has built that connection at scale yet. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone does.
